Orthodontics:

The Road to Straight Teeth starts Today

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing and correcting malocclusion—misaligned teeth and jaws. Using evidence-based techniques such as fixed braces, clear aligners and functional appliances, orthodontic treatment improves dental alignment, bite function and facial harmony.

Whether you are considering traditional braces or modern clear aligner therapy, orthodontics is not purely cosmetic. It is a biologically driven process that repositions teeth within the alveolar bone to achieve optimal occlusion, long-term oral health and aesthetic balance.

  • Orthodontic treatment is suitable for:

    • Teenagers with developing dentition

    • Adults seeking cosmetic smile enhancement

    • Patients with crowding, spacing or bite irregularities

    • Individuals preparing for aesthetic or restorative dentistry

Modern orthodontics is discreet and highly customised. Clear aligner systems offer a nearly invisible solution for professionals who prefer a subtle approach.

  • Below are some of the considerations we make before we recommend you either Braces or Clear Aligners to straighten your teeth.

    Traditional Braces:

    • Are highly effective for complex bites and jaw alignments (malocclusions)

    • Are more suited to when fixed appliance therapy is required

    • Have predictable biomechanical control which means your treatment may be slightly shorter in duration

    Clear Aligners:

    • Are removable and discreet

    • Comfortable and aesthetic

    • Ideal for mild to moderate crowding and spacing

Please note, a comprehensive clinical assessment is required to determine the most appropriate modality based on occlusal analysis, skeletal pattern and treatment goals.

  • Orthodontics is not an expense—it is an investment in:

    • Oral health longevity

    • Functional efficiency

    • Aesthetic harmony

    • Self-confidence

Delaying treatment can allow misalignment to worsen, increasing the complexity and cost of future intervention.

Straight teeth are easier to maintain, more resistant to disease, and less prone to mechanical failure. When your bite is stable and your smile is aligned, every other aspect of dentistry becomes more predictable.

  • Here at Aesthetic Zone Dentistry, treatment can vary from as little as 3-6 months in simple cases, up to 24 months for more complex cases.

You will be given an estimate of treatment time during your initial consultation.

Our Clients always ask us…

Why is Orthodontics Important?

1. Improved Oral Health

Crooked, crowded or rotated teeth create plaque-retentive areas that are difficult to clean. This increases the risk of:

  • Dental caries (tooth decay)

  • Gingivitis and periodontal disease

  • Chronic inflammation and bleeding gums

Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss effectively. Proper alignment reduces bacterial accumulation and supports long-term periodontal stability.

2. Better Bite Function (Occlusion)

Malocclusion—such as overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite—can lead to:

  • Uneven tooth wear

  • Enamel fractures

  • Jaw discomfort

  • Headaches and muscle fatigue

Orthodontic treatment harmonises the relationship between the upper and lower arches, distributing occlusal forces evenly. This reduces strain on teeth, restorations and the temporomandibular joints.

3. Protection of Long-Term Dental Investment

If you have invested in cosmetic dentistry—such as veneers, crowns or implants—alignment is critical. Orthodontics ensures:

  • Stable occlusion

  • Reduced risk of chipping or failure

  • Longer lifespan of restorations such as fillings, crowns, veneers, implants, inlays or onlays

In many modern treatment plans, orthodontics is performed before cosmetic procedures to create a stable and predictable foundation.

4. Enhanced Facial Aesthetics

Teeth are a structural component of the lower third of the face. Orthodontic treatment can:

  • Improve smile symmetry

  • Broaden the smile arc

  • Reduce protrusion or retrusion

  • Improve lip support

Straight teeth enhance both the smile and overall facial profile. The psychological impact is significant—patients often report increased confidence in social and professional settings.

5. Speech and Functional Benefits

Severe misalignment can affect phonetics and articulation. Correcting spacing or bite discrepancies may improve speech clarity and chewing efficiency.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners such as Invisalign® or ClearCorrect® are a modern solution that is growing more and more popular. They are essentially clear trays (called aligners) which sit over and above your teeth which progressively move your teeth one step at a time. Typically each set of aligners is worn up to 22 hours per day, for an average of 2 weeks at a time, to move your teeth from where they are today, to where we intend them to be.

Metallic Braces

Traditionally, metallic braces have been viewed negatively from the point of view of aesthetics and comfort. Not anymore!

Here at Aesthetic Zone Dentistry we pride ourselves in using the most minimilastic metallic bracket and wire systems to achieve your Orthodontic goals in the most efficient and comfortable manner possible. We use brackets that are smaller and more discreet than brackets of old, as well as wires specifically designed to make tooth movement easier and more comfortable by using more gentle forces.

Metal braces are great for speed of movement, which means that for most people, their teeth can be straightened sooner than alternative options.

Your expected treatment time will always be discussed with you during your intitial consultation.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are a wonderful alternative to traditional metallic braces for suitable patients who perhaps do not wish to have as much metal visible throughout their Orthodontic treatment journey. Depending on your specific condition, ceramic braces may be capable of achieving everything that can be achieved using metal braces in a similar amount of time.

Your suitability for Ceramic Braces will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.
